On July 4, 1805, while most people were celebrating Independence Day, one of the greatest influential writers of the Dark Romanticism Era was born. Elizabeth Clark Hathorne and her husband Nathaniel Hathorne Sr. gave birth to a baby boy. Little did they know, this little infant would develop into one of America’s most famous authors of all time. Most Americans are familiar with his greatest works like The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables. Through the influence of his past ancestors, his dark childhood, his college experience, and his fellow author friends, Nathaniel Hathorne (Hawthorne) is one of the most renowned authors of the Romanticism period which took place during the late 1800s. Nathaniel Hathorne was born into the family of William Hathorne. William was one of the magistrates who sentenced the Quaker women to death during the Salem Witch Trials He was born into a family with a very strong Puritan heritage. As he grew up, he was ashamed to be related to the Hathorne bloodline of William Hathorne. He was, as Hawthorne later characterized him, a bitter persecutor of Quakers. In particular, was solely responsible for ordering the whipping of Ann Coleman. Hawthorne refers to this ancestor as a persecutor of Quakers. Due to this, he eventually changed his last name by adding a â€Å"W† to it. He did this in an attempt to conceal his relation to William.
